10 Tips for Disclosure of Conviction(s)

10 TIPS FOR DISCLOSURE OF CONVICTION(S)

  1. Depending on your offence history or the job you’re applying for, if you are not asked about your unspent conviction/s you do not have to disclose (tell anyone). See FAQ’s on disclosure of convictions on our website here
  2. If you are asked, be honest, but keep it short
  3. Do not go into detail about the offence
  4. Mention only the type of conviction, the date and the sentence given
  5. Emphasise any achievements since your conviction
  6. Give reasons why employer should discount the conviction. If it’s not relevant to the job, ask to be considered on ability and not on your past.
  7. Try to highlight circumstances that lead to offence which no longer apply
  8. Sound positive
  9. Don’t criticise the criminal justice system or past employers
  10. Accept responsibility for your actions.  Show regret
