- Depending on your offence history or the job you’re applying for, if you are not asked about your unspent conviction/s you do not have to disclose (tell anyone). See FAQ’s on disclosure of convictions on our website here
- If you are asked, be honest, but keep it short
- Do not go into detail about the offence
- Mention only the type of conviction, the date and the sentence given
- Emphasise any achievements since your conviction
- Give reasons why employer should discount the conviction. If it’s not relevant to the job, ask to be considered on ability and not on your past.
- Try to highlight circumstances that lead to offence which no longer apply
- Sound positive
- Don’t criticise the criminal justice system or past employers
- Accept responsibility for your actions. Show regret
