The GATE Service

The GATE Service has been in operation since 2007 and is a joint initiative between the Irish Association for the Social Integration of Offenders (IASIO) and the Irish Prison Service (IPS).

The GATE Service is a unique prison based ‘through-the-gate’ employment service that fosters stable resettlement and reintegration.


What does the Training and Employment Officer (TEO) do?

The Training and Employment Officer (TEO) works with those in prison to help them develop a plan for release with a focus on training, education or employment and to identify barriers standing in the way of this.

How can the TEO help me?

The TEO can:

  • Provide life guidance
  • Identify suitable training, education and employment opportunities in the prison and the community to help plan for your release
  • Help you to write a good CV
  • Help you to gain interview skills
  • Advise you on how and when to disclose your offence
  • Advise you on job searching
  • Provide psychometric assessment which includes careers assessments, personality assessments and aptitude assessments. The TEO can give you more information on these if you’re interested.
  • The TEO can help you register with Intreo while you are still in custody so that you can be put on the waiting list for a suitable course.

Who is suitable to meet the TEO?

To be referred to the TEO you must be:

  • Stable on methadone or free of drug and/or alcohol abuse problems
  • Approaching your release date
  • Motivated and willing to engage with work & training or education during your sentence and also on release
